Optimizing Your Toothbrushing Technique

Cleaner Teeth, Fresher Breath, and Better Checkups

Good oral hygiene has multiple benefits. It can improve your overall health, but the immediate benefits are fresh breath and clean, healthy teeth. Surprisingly, most people are currently brushing their teeth incorrectly. Learning the proper way to brush your teeth to remove plaque will help you achieve the perfect smile. Once you’ve mastered brushing your teeth, you will notice your oral health is much better. Use the following tips to get the perfect clean every time.

The Importance of Brushing Your Teeth

Good oral health means more than just having a nice smile. Oral health issues have been linked to general health problems. There are many diseases that are caused by a lack of proper oral hygiene. Bad oral hygiene can cause bacteria build-up that can lead to pneumonia, cardiovascular disease, sepsis, and even cancer.

Throughout the day, your mouth develops plaque and other bacteria. This can harden on the teeth in the form of tartar and cause tooth decay. By brushing your teeth at least twice a day, every day, you are able to remove the bacteria that causes plaque build-up.

Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

Brushing your teeth twice a day every day, at least, is a great start. However, there are other methods to improve your oral health. Pair any of the following with your toothbrushing routine for a deeper clean.

  • Schedule bi-annual visits to the dentist. A dentist can provide a deeper clean and identify any underlying issues that can lead to issues later on.
  • Eat a healthy diet. A balanced, healthy diet has all the right nutrients that help protect your teeth from cavities and gingivitis. Try to limit your intake of sugar or acidic foods, as they can damage your teeth over time.
  • Avoid tobacco and coffee when possible. It has been proven that coffee and tobacco damage your gums, stains your teeth, and causes bad breath.
  • Floss and use mouthwash after brushing your teeth. Sometimes, brushing isn’t able to reach every part of your mouth. Dental floss is able to reach in between the teeth and clean along the gumline, and mouthwash is great for freshening your breath.
  • Don’t neglect cleaning your tongue. Bacteria can build up on the surface of your tongue. This can directly cause bad breath, so make sure you use your toothbrush or a specialized tongue brush daily.
  • Drink lots of water. Water helps to prevent food and debris from the day from getting stuck in your teeth. It also neutralizes any acidic foods that might damage your teeth.

Proper Brushing Technique

Most people don’t brush their teeth properly daily. Whether they skip a day, brush for less time than recommended, or use a technique that doesn’t work, lots of people all over the world are jeopardizing their oral health due to laziness or a lack of information.

In order to brush your teeth properly, you need to be brushing twice a day for two minutes each time. To do this, you will need:

  • A toothbrush
  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Mouthwash (optional)

You should be replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months. If you use a manual toothbrush, you’ll need to buy a whole new one, but if you prefer electric toothbrushes, you can simply buy replacement brush heads. If you don’t replace them frequently, bacteria can grow within the brush and its bristles become frayed or flattened, causing it to not work as well as it needs to.

The American Dental Association recommends looking for a toothpaste with fluoride in it. Fluoride prevents tooth decay and strengthens your teeth. As long as your toothpaste has fluoride in it, you can choose between any of the options available. Different toothpaste formulas serve different purposes: some whiten, some target bad breath, and some are even designed for sensitive teeth.

According to the American Dental Association, correct toothbrushing is made up of six steps:

  1. Wet your toothbrush with water before putting a small amount of toothpaste on the bristles. You should be using about a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
  2. Brush your teeth at about a 45-degree angle. Using gentle, small circular movements, move the toothbrush around your mouth so it cleans the exterior of each tooth.
  3. Brush all sides of your teeth, making sure to reach your back molars.
  4. Flip the toothbrush upside down to get the inside surface of your top front teeth, then flip it the other way to reach the inside of your bottom front teeth.
  5. Brush your tongue to get rid of any bacteria.
  6. Spit out the remains of any toothpaste, and rinse your mouth with cold water.

To get a deeper clean, use dental floss either before or after brushing your teeth. Additionally, finishing your toothbrushing routine with some antibacterial mouthwash will help prevent bacteria build-up and leave your breath smelling fresh all day.

Brushing With an Electric Toothbrush

Rechargeable electric toothbrushes are great for those who struggle with proper toothbrushing. There are lots of features on electric toothbrushes designed to make it easier and more enjoyable for you. Many of these toothbrushes have either oscillating or sonic technology to provide better oral health results than regular manual toothbrushes. They provide electric-charged movement to help clean the surface of your teeth beyond what we can do just with our hands.

Oscillating toothbrushes have circular brush heads that rotate. The rotation of the bristles is a movement that can dislodge and break down any plaque that might be stuck on the surface of your teeth unable to be removed by a manual toothbrush. Most sonic toothbrushes rotate in two directions – clockwise and counter-clockwise – to get a really deep clean.

Sonic toothbrushes vibrate at speeds beyond human capabilities. The quick-vibrating brush heads are then able to quickly and efficiently clean the surface of each tooth much better than a manual toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes come with multiple features that help provide a deep clean every time, such as:

  • 30-second interval timers. When brushing with an electric toothbrush, you divide your mouth into four quadrants: top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right. Once you start, the toothbrush will vibrate to notify you when 30 seconds is up and you should move on to the next quadrant. This guarantees each section of your mouth is cleaned thoroughly.
  • 2-minute automatic shut-off timer. Most electric toothbrushes come with an automatic shut-off timer set to 2 minutes. Since it is recommended to brush for a full two minutes, the toothbrush will automatically shut off when you have brushed for long enough.
  • Pressure sensors. Newer electric toothbrushes come equipped with sensors that will let you know if you are applying too much pressure to the brush. Brushing too hard will damage your teeth and gums, so you want to make sure you’re being mindful of hard you’re brushing.
  • Brush replacement sensors. It can be easy to forget when to replace your brush heads. Some electric toothbrush models have sensors that let you know when it’s time to replace your brush head.

Electric toothbrushes are great for everyone, especially people with mobility issues, people with braces, and children. They are simple and designed to clean your teeth thoroughly.

A Deeper Clean with Silk’n ToothWave

While electric toothbrushes have been the most effective way to clean your teeth for decades, they still are only able to clean the surface of the tooth. Certain dental problems like staining and tartar can’t be fixed with surface-level cleaning. Typically, your bi-annual visit to the dentist is the time to ask about tartar removal or teeth whitening. However, that’s all about to change.

Silk’n recently released their innovative way to offer a deeper clean than what’s already available on the market. Their new electric toothbrush, ToothWave, offers a clean that goes deeper than the surface. ToothWave targets imperfections that are past the surface from a molecular standpoint.

Using their patented DentalRF technology, Silk’n created a molecularly charged toothbrush to deal with tartar and deep discolouration. Tartar and staining are caused by bacteria that forms a molecular bond with the tooth itself. The ToothWave uses mild radiofrequency waves to break those bonds in a gentle, easy way.

The ToothWave is proven to reduce gum inflammation and bleeding, reduce teeth stains, brighten teeth, and reduce existing tartar. Clinical studies show that the ToothWave reduced gingivitis by 45%, gum bleeding by 35%, stain reduction by 37%, and produced 2 shades of teeth whitening within six weeks.
